Bolivia, Peru, the best way to travel as backpackers remain in Asia. You can organize many tours organized on the spot, if you wish, or so you can fend for yourself for some more sightseeing.
Chili and Argentina, backpacking is also a good means of transportation. That said, these two countries are opposed to the discovery of large spaces and spectacular scenery, rather than contact with the population. It is therefore very interesting to rent a vehicle or vehicles at various locations across the country. We rented a car for three days (rather short) around lakes Argentines in San Martin, a 4x4 to get through the Carretera Austral, or a week's rental near Salta Jujuy (The ideal, given how others have struggled for backpackers bus and htotel).
We believe that the time saved thanks to the car compensates well the extra money to spend on site. For us, one day car rental can visit as much as in two days of backpacking (depending on location of course). Considering the price of hotel, meals, bus transportation, rental is profitable! In addition, the vehicle allows you to access more easily to campsites, cheaper than if you were to take a hotel in town. It wins all the way!
In places where trekking lends itself perfectly, camping, camp is also a very good way to appreciate the beauty of the great national parks like Torres del Paine or Los Coolers (Fitz Roy, Perito Moreno).
